The Further Education sector as a whole is funded by the Scottish Funding Council, acting on behalf of the Scottish Ministers. Overall strategic direction for the sector is provided by the Lifelong Learning Department (LLD) of the Scottish Government. LLD liaises closely with bodies such as Colleges Scotland and the College Development Network (formerly Scotland's Colleges but now rebranded since December 2012). More information on the Scottish Government's role in delivering Further Education can be found on their website.
Practitioners in the Further Education sector are supported in their professional development by the College Development Network.

The Education Scotland website, provides advice, support, resources and staff development to the whole Scottish education community. It has a section on ESOL in the CLD part of the site and an online ESOL group on Connect:Communities of Practice. The NQ Online section of the Education Scotland website also provides support materials to aid teaching and learning and presently has resources relating to Access 3 and Higher SQA ESOL courses. The site is also a good source of information on wider developments in Scottish Education generally, such as Curriculum for Excellence.
